Watch the Ignite talk I gave on August 4th in Charlotte!

by Andrew Gertig on August 19, 2010

5 minutes, 20 slides, auto-advance every 15 seconds.  GO!

I gave this talk at the first Ignite event held in Charlotte, NC on August 4th 2010 at the Neighborhood Theatre.  My talk was on the topic of cell phone technology, where we’ve come from and where it is going. Ignite is a series of speedy presentations about topics that people are geeky about.  Each speaker gets exactly 20 slides which auto-advance every 15 seconds for a total of exactly 5 minutes per talk.  To learn about Ignite Charlotte, check out http://ignitecharlotte.org and to learn about Ignite in general check out http://ignite.oreilly.com.

Nice job, Gertig! I especially liked the slide on “voyerism.” Props on the arduino home automation too!

Thanks, I enjoyed drawing it! Have you done much arduino tinkering?

  • Nathanael

No, but I just picked up a TI Launchpad, so I hope to get some micro-p stuff done soon.

ute. well done. a touch of nerves crept into the twang here and there, but solid talk.

agree wid nat. the voyerism graph was my favorite.

Hey, how’d you get into doing that? Nice talk. BTW Sometimes people are mean on the internet just because they can be.

I have to say that I still don’t know about using phones for everything. I mean my GPS annoys me sometimes and its one big screen that I’m using for one thing. My current phone annoys me sometimes and I use it for like 3 things. My laptop mouse annoys me majorly! I’m not into the teeny weeny keys, finger scrolling, touch screen stuff etc. Seems like a major pain!!! A voice controlled phone might be really cool but what do you do in public? Where it can hear all those other people? LOL And they can hear you dictating your text?

    Thanks!

I guess the trick is when you stop thinking about your phone as a phone and as your one size does everything device. My Droid does GPS navigation way better than my Garmin GPS does so it has replaced it, and all laptop mouses are annoying because of ergonomics and usability. Teeny weeny keys and finger scrolling are only an issue when you are using your phone when you not at home. In 5 years when you are at home you will just set your phone down in front of your monitor and keyboard and it will act as your full fledged PC. No wires needed.

Cell phones can already run Windows XP, its only a matter of time before we figure out wireless charging. We already have bluetooth keyboards, we just need bluetooth connection to our monitors and we’re set. Your phone will be a phone/gps/music/car keys/credit card when not at home and it will be your PC while at home. I’m looking forward to it.

Voice control is useful for when you are driving, otherwise not so much. In 16 1/2 years you will control your phone with your mind. Don’t ask me how I know.
